APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM, STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
The Apprenticeship Training Program is designed to provide the
systematic skills training that will lead individuals to
profitable
employment in a wide variety of occupations. Apprentices must be
16 years old and generally are 18 years or older. Apprenticeship
Training combines on-the-job training with related supplemental
instruction in all aspects of an occupation, resulting in
broad-based
technical skills supported by theoretical knowledge. To qualify,
potential apprentices must first be employed in the desired
occupation,
and demonstrate the physical and mental competencies required to
perform that job.
Employers participate as sponsors of apprenticeship programs.
An apprenticeship program can be designed to assist most
employers in
training their employees in skilled occupations. Since prior
employment (or an agreement to employ) is required before
apprentices can
be included in a recognized program, employers are primarily
responsible for the selection of apprentices.
Employers may select apprentices from a "restricted
pool"of their own employees or from all qualified
applicants. In either case,
selection must be "on the basis of qualifications alone and
without regard to a race, creed, color, national origin, sex or
occupational
irrelevant physical requirements."
HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS:
The Apprenticeship Division is not a provider of on-the-job training. However, the Division performs the following services:
1. It certifies employers to give training;
2. It recognizes the acceptance of chosen employees into programs of Apprenticeship Training;
3. It monitors the training given in the field to ensure that it is given in accordance with established standards;
4. It coordinates with the Department of Education for classroom instruction associated with Apprenticeship Training;
5. It acts as the State approving agency for Apprenticeship and Veterans Educational Benefits.
Most apprenticeship programs require more than 4,000 hours of
training and take from two years to five years to complete. More
than three quarters of the apprentices are enrolled in programs
in the five construction trades as: carpenters, electricians,
iron workers,
plumbers, and sheet metal workers. Apprenticeships can be
developed in a wide variety of other occupations as well that
require
manual, mechanical, or technical skills and knowledge.
Wages paid to apprentices are determined in the agreement
between the employer and the New Hampshire Apprenticeship
Council.
The minimum wage shall be not less than the state minimum and at
the conclusion of the apprenticeship shall be not less than that
paid to fully qualified craftsworkers.
Apprenticeship is also for women who need increased access to
high paying jobs. We strongly encourage women to find out about
the
wide range of jobs that can be learned through apprenticeship and
to take the steps necessary to apply and qualify for
apprenticeable jobs.
